History & Description

The present lighthouse was built in 1941 to mark the outer end of the breakwater protecting Presque Isle Harbor. This is Marquette’s Upper Harbor on Lake Superior, separate from the Old and New Presque Isle light stations on Lake Huron.

The cylindrical steel tower rises from a low, octagonal building. Its white walls and red band create a clear daytime mark; the light above helps vessels identify the harbor entrance.

The long breakwater is as much a part of the scene as the tower. Todd’s wider photograph follows its line across the lake, while the closer view reveals the lighthouse’s compact shape and rocky foundation. The station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Visitor Information

Getting there
Follow Lakeshore Boulevard north to Presque Isle Park in Marquette. The park and marina area provide the setting for views of the Upper Harbor breakwater.
Plan your visit
Check the City of Marquette’s Presque Isle Park information for current hours, seasonal road access, and park rules.
Breakwater access
Plan for exterior viewing and follow all posted closures. Only venture onto the breakwater when access is permitted and conditions are calm. Waves, wind, and ice can make the exposed structure dangerous; remain ashore when conditions are uncertain.
Photography
A wide view shows the light at the end of its long approach. A closer composition emphasizes the red band and the contrast between the white tower, dark rocks, and blue water.
