History & Description
The first lighthouse at Marquette was completed in 1853 as the young harbor developed. Growing lake commerce, especially the iron ore trade, made reliable navigation aids important along this exposed Lake Superior shore.
The original structure deteriorated and was replaced in 1866. The new brick lighthouse combined a keeper’s dwelling with an attached square tower. Later additions gave the building its larger form.
Its vivid red exterior stands out against the surrounding trees, gray rock, and blue water. Todd’s photographs show the station from the shoreline and above, including the red stairway and catwalk across the point.
The City of Marquette received ownership of the site in 2016. The Marquette Maritime Museum interprets the lighthouse’s history through guided visits, connecting the building with the keepers, Coast Guard, and shipping activity that shaped the harbor.
