Weathered boardwalk rails lead toward a crisp white tower with red trim, while ferries cross the water beyond. Wawatam is part of everyday waterfront life in St. Ignace. Its setting recalls the railroad ferries that once used this dock, but the lighthouse itself arrived here by a much more recent and unexpected route.

History & Description
Wawatam began as a roadside landmark rather than a working lighthouse. Built in 1998 for a Michigan Welcome Center near Monroe, the tower was offered a new home when that site was renovated in 2004. St. Ignace brought it north in sections.
Reassembled on the waterfront in 2006, it gained a practical role when its beacon was first lit that August. The white tower and red lantern now form a familiar landmark on Moran Bay.
The name connects the modern light to the Chief Wawatam railroad ferry and the dock it once served. Remnants of the ferry infrastructure help explain the older industrial waterfront beneath today’s walking route.
Its simple tapered sides give the tower a different character from the weathered brick lighthouses elsewhere in the Straits. The boardwalk, rough timber, pale shoreline rocks, and passing boats make its setting especially rewarding to explore on foot.
