A slender white tower rises from a red enclosure and a broad, angular concrete base. Standing offshore from Mackinac Island, Round Island Passage Light is a familiar sight from the ferries crossing this busy channel.

History & Description
Construction began in 1947, and the new Round Island Passage station entered service on April 15, 1948. It marked the north side of the channel opposite the older Round Island Lighthouse.
The station was designed for unattended operation with remote control from Mackinac Island. Its broad concrete foundation supports a red equipment enclosure and a tall white tower, a practical contrast to the dwelling-and-tower arrangement of the older light.
The lighthouse passed to private ownership in 2014 through the federal lighthouse disposal program. It continues to mark the passage, where commercial vessels, ferries, and recreational boats share the water.
Todd’s photographs show the structure from several angles, including its foundation, reflections, and setting against Mackinac Island. A wider view captures the movement of ferries around the light.
Visitor Information
- Viewing the light
- Mackinac Island ferry crossings and sightseeing boats offer views of the offshore tower. Exact routes and distances vary, so ask your operator about lighthouse viewing before booking.
- Access
- The lighthouse is privately owned and is not open for public tours. View it from the water without landing. See Discover St. Ignace’s visitor listing for location information.
- Photography
- A boat crossing lets you frame the tower against the island, open water, or passing ferries. Use a faster shutter speed on a moving deck, and keep your camera secure around spray.
- Two nearby lights
- The historic red-and-white Round Island Lighthouse stands across the channel on Round Island. It is a separate station from this offshore passage light.
