History & Description
Port Sanilac Lighthouse was first lit on October 20, 1886. It joined the chain of Lake Huron lights that helped mariners follow the shoreline and identify their position along Michigan’s Thumb.
The white octagonal tower stands beside a brick keeper’s dwelling with prominent stepped gables. Their contrasting forms give the station a distinctive silhouette: a narrow tower above an angular, domestic building.
The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation. Its original Fresnel lens was replaced by a modern LED beacon and preserved for display at the station. Private owners restored the property between 2015 and 2017.
Todd’s two photographs show the station beneath cloud-filled skies. One frames the dwelling and tower above a weathered fence; the closer portrait highlights the tower and the house’s brickwork.
