A graceful white tower rises far above its green-trimmed keeper’s dwelling. New Presque Isle’s height and open park setting make it one of Lake Huron’s most memorable light stations.

History & Description
Built in 1870 and placed in service in 1871, the New Presque Isle station replaced the older harbor lighthouse about a mile south. Its taller tower served the growing coastal traffic on Lake Huron.
The 113-foot brick tower follows the design associated with engineers Orlando M. Poe and William Raynolds. The gallery brackets and windows below the lantern add detail to its slender silhouette.
The original keeper’s dwelling connects to the tower. A separate house added in 1905 provided more living space and now serves as a museum. The original third-order Fresnel lens is displayed in the 1870 dwelling.
Todd’s photographs explore the tower from several sides, showing how its height changes the scale of the buildings below. The final image records a peninsula map for geographic context.
Visitor Information
- Arriving
- The station is at the north end of Presque Isle Peninsula, at 4500 East Grand Lake Road. The Old Presque Isle Lighthouse is a separate site nearby.

- Building visits and climbs operate seasonally. The museum society’s October 2026 information lists the buildings as closed for winter, while New Lighthouse Park remains open year-round. Check the official hours and seasonal updates before traveling.
- Tower climbs
- When offered, climbs depend on weather and visitor eligibility. Review current height requirements, supervision rules, and admission information before planning a climb.
