History & Description

Muskegon’s lighthouse history began in 1851. As the harbor developed, its piers and navigational aids changed to accommodate shipping between Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake.

The present South Pierhead Light dates to 1903. Its round, tapered steel tower carries a lantern room retained from the earlier 1870 lighthouse. The all-red silhouette remains a familiar landmark beside the entrance channel.

Harbor improvements in the late 1920s and early 1930s created the arrowhead breakwaters. The South Breakwater Light was established in 1931 at the outer end of the southern arm. Its square, pyramidal form distinguishes it immediately from the round Pierhead tower.

Both lights transferred to the Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy in 2010. Preservation work continues, while the Coast Guard maintains the aids to navigation. Together, the two towers connect Muskegon’s shipping history with the beach and waterfront visitors enjoy today.

Visitor Information

Getting there
Start at Pere Marquette Park on Muskegon’s Lake Michigan waterfront. Beach parking provides views of the harbor entrance and both towers.
South Pierhead access
Follow the designated visitor pathway through the NOAA Lake Michigan Field Station property at 1431 Beach Street. Stay on the marked route and respect the working facilities.
South Breakwater access
The outer breakwater extends from the beach. View the tower from shore when waves, ice, or wet surfaces make the exposed walkway unsafe. Follow posted restrictions.
Tours and planning
The South Pierhead Light offers seasonal tours. Plan on exterior views of the South Breakwater Light. Check Muskegon Lights for current openings, conditions, and visitor details.
Photography
The beach gives a broad view of both towers, dune grass, and the lake. Channel-side views emphasize the round Pierhead Light; the outer breakwater highlights the square tower and its long approach.
