History & Description

Martin Reef lies east of the Straits of Mackinac in northern Lake Huron. Its shallow water presented a hazard along the approaches to these busy Great Lakes passages. A lightship began marking the reef in 1906.

The permanent lighthouse was completed in 1927, replacing the lightship with a fixed station. Its broad concrete pier supports a compact, multi-story building topped by a smaller lantern structure.

The station’s practical design brings the light and former living spaces together above the water. Rows of windows, pale walls, and the surrounding gallery give the building a distinctive stacked silhouette.

Todd’s photographs show the lighthouse from several boat-based perspectives, from a wider composition with open water to a close portrait of the station. The visible weathering at pier level contrasts with the light-colored upper walls.

Visitor Information

How to see it
Martin Reef is an offshore lighthouse. Confirm that your boat operator’s route includes the station before arranging a trip from the northern Lake Huron area.
Landing and tower access
Plan for exterior viewing from the water. Do not assume a landing or tower climb is available; confirm permission and access arrangements directly before planning to board the structure.
Trip planning
Wind, waves, and visibility affect offshore viewing. Ask your captain about the route, trip duration, and weather arrangements.
Photography
A wide frame emphasizes the lighthouse’s open-water setting. A closer view shows the windows, railings, and lantern. Use a faster shutter speed to reduce movement from the boat.
