A white tower, a low island, and a wide sweep of blue water: Skillagalee is one of northern Lake Michigan’s most distinctive lighthouse settings. The surrounding rocky shoreline makes clear why a beacon was needed here.

History & Description

Ile Aux Galets, commonly called Skillagalee, lies between Beaver Island and Michigan’s mainland. Its French name means “island of pebbles,” a fitting description of the low, stony shore visible in Todd’s photograph.

The Coast Guard dates the station’s establishment to 1850. Successive towers served this exposed island before the present lighthouse first shone in 1888. The octagonal brick tower, painted white beneath a black lantern, stands on a stone foundation and originally held a fourth-order Fresnel lens.

Life at the station once depended on much more than the tower. Keepers maintained the light, fog signal, and buildings while working in a setting shaped by weather and changing lake levels. In 1969, automation ended the resident keeper era. The keeper’s dwelling, fog-signal building, and other station structures were demolished, leaving the lighthouse standing alone.

That solitary tower is the focus of the island today. In the photograph, its narrow profile rises above low vegetation while gulls gather along the shore. The broad view shows both the lighthouse and the small patch of land it occupies.

Visitor Information

How to see it
Skillagalee is an offshore destination. Plan for an exterior view from the water rather than a walk-up lighthouse stop. Confirm whether a boat operator’s route includes the island before booking.
Island and tower access
Do not assume a landing or tower climb is available. Confirm permission and any restrictions with the property owner or your operator before arranging a visit.
Planning your view
Wind, waves, and visibility influence offshore trips. Ask your operator about the route and weather arrangements, and leave the approach through surrounding shallow water to an experienced captain.
Photography
A wide composition includes the tower, shoreline, and surrounding lake. From a moving boat, a faster shutter speed helps preserve the lighthouse’s sharp outline. Observe the shoreline birds from a distance.
