Near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, Copper Harbor Lighthouse stands between a forested shore and the open water of Lake Superior. The red roof and black lantern give the station a warm, recognizable outline. Beside it, a skeletal steel tower tells the next chapter of the same maritime story.

History & Description
Copper Harbor’s light station began service in 1849, during the copper-mining era that drew ships and settlement to the Keweenaw. Its task was to mark the harbor entrance on a coast where reefs, rock and Lake Superior weather made a dependable beacon valuable.
The present lighthouse dates to 1866. A square brick tower rises from the attached keeper’s dwelling, bringing the work of tending a light and the routines of family life into one building. The earlier keeper’s residence also survives on the grounds.
In 1933, the navigation light moved to the adjacent steel tower. The historic building ceased to serve as the working beacon, while the station continued to guide vessels. Todd’s photographs show both structures together: the compact dwelling and lantern beside the taller, open framework of the modern aid.
Today the historic station forms part of the Fort Wilkins and Copper Harbor Lighthouses site. Exhibits, period rooms and interpretive trails explore shipping dangers, keeper duties and life at the station. Preserving the buildings allows visitors to understand the human work behind a light seen from the water.

Visitor Information
- Plan your approach
- The historic lighthouse is on the mainland but has no public road approach. Plan boat access rather than a drive to its door. View the lighthouse location →
- Boat tours
- The DNR lists Noah’s Ark Charters for lighthouse boat tours, boarding at the Bella Vista Motel dock. Confirm current dates, prices, landing arrangements and weather conditions directly before booking.
- View from shore
- Fort Wilkins has a lighthouse overlook north of the parade grounds. It offers a view across the water without taking a boat.
- Tower and interiors
- The Lighthouse Directory lists the historic tower as closed. Ask the park or tour operator which grounds and exhibits are available during your visit; do not assume a lantern climb is included.

- A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Fort Wilkins Historic State Park. Boat-tour charges are separate. The park office can answer access questions at 906-289-4215.
- Photographs
- A view from the water shows the red roof against the trees. Wider compositions include the steel beacon and explain the station’s changing role.
