A lighthouse need not stand on an isolated headland to have an important story. Here in Cheboygan, a white keeper’s house carries a square tower above the streets near the river. Its red panels announce a practical purpose: helping vessels find their course into a working harbor.

History & Description

Established in 1880, the Front Range Light served a town whose lumber mills and river traffic made reliable navigation essential. Channel improvements created a better approach from Lake Huron; range lights helped vessels follow that approach.

A range uses two lights positioned at different heights. Viewed from the correct direction, the lower front light lines up beneath the higher rear light. That alignment gives a mariner a course to follow. The Front Range is one part of that system, rather than a solitary beacon marking every direction.

The approximately 40-foot wooden tower is attached to the keeper’s house. Its white clapboard, dark lantern, red daymarks and locomotive-style lamp distinguish it from Cheboygan’s smaller octagonal Crib Light. The two sites nevertheless shared a working connection: keepers at the range station also tended the offshore Crib Light.

After federal use, the building entered a new chapter of preservation. The Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association received ownership in 2004, and guided tours began in 2005. Work on the lantern and gallery followed in 2009. Today, volunteer keepers welcome visitors while helping care for the building and grounds.
